Don't worry, I got you! 😄 Let me introduce you my amazing city.

Welcome to

PORTO

Hello Cátia! 😃 Super curious about your city! Show me some fun facts! 🤭

Hey there stranger! 👋 Of course!

The name of the city of Porto comes from a pre-Roman settlement. At the time it was called Cale or Portus Cale, which is the origin of the name of Portugal 🇵🇹. The word Portus, has as meaning the commercial life and the desire of a pioneer people in the discovery of the unknown. From very early on, Porto revealed its commitment and potential in shipbuilding, both industrially and commercially.

HistoriaPorto

“Antiga, Mui Nobre, Sempre Leal e Invicta”

Our city is known as "Cidade Invicta"!

Invicta means Invincible! 💪💪💪

During the Liberal Wars (1832 - 1834), Porto was surrounded by absolutist troops. This period, which lasted more than a year, in which liberal troops were surrounded, is called the Siege of Porto. With this heroic resistance, Porto proved to be undefeated in the face of D. Miguel's assaults, ensuring the victory of the liberals led by D. Pedro throughout the country. D. Maria II, successor to the throne, later attributed the title of Invicta to the city, and this reference is still present in her municipal coat of arms.

Also, did you known that we are called "Tripeiros"? 😲

In 1414, the king D. João I started his plans to expand the Portuguese horizons by conquering Ceuta, a city in Northern Africa. The king needed a strong military force and decided to send his sons, D. Pedro to Lisbon, and D. Henrique to Porto, to start organizing the expedition. When D. Henrique arrived at Porto he became quite worried that everything they had was not enough. He confesses his worries to the Master of Preparation, the one in charge of the preparations, that they would need more. That’s when the Master asked for the population’s help. Quite promptly, Porto’s People not only offered themselves to go on the expedition but also offered all the meat they had in the city, keeping only the tripes of the animals for those who stayed inland. And this is where the pride comes from. When the country needed their help, they gave themselves and everything they had for this huge adventure in detriment of their own wellbeing.

Wow, did not know that... I heard you have a tipical dish with a similar name...

Well done. Sure, let me introduce you "Tripas à moda do Porto".

Tripas

Tripas à moda do Porto or dobrada à moda do Porto in Portuguese cuisine is a dish of beef stomach made with tripe with white beans, carrots and rice. It is considered the traditional dish of the city of Porto, in Portugal, and widely known across the entire country where it is also simply called dobrada.

The restaurant "O Rápido" is a "nest", there on Rua da Madeira next to the S.Bento Station, where it is possible to have a good conversation, unlike the "food factories" in which the noise expels the desire for good. to eat and taste better.d Discretion, friendliness, quality and a family atmosphere - factors that, like the old pleasure of feeling the cloth of properly identified napkins, quickly win over customers.

I am so hungry!!!! 😡 Do you think Porto's gastronomy is going to put me in the right mood?! 🤤

Trust me when I say "Francesinha"! 🤩

Francesinha

The francesinha in its special francesinha sandwich variation is more commonly made up of sausage, fresh sausage, ham, beef steak, topped with cheese that has been melted later. It is garnished with a tomato, beer and piri-piri-based sauce and can be served with French fries as an accompaniment. The addition of a fried egg on top of the sandwich is an increasingly recurrent fact, and this practice constitutes a change to the original recipe. In some houses, the so-called normal francesinha is served without steak.

Porto cooks stuff crispy rolls with slow-cooked pork leg slices and ooey-gooey, slightly funky Serra da Estrela cheese (see below) to make Pernil com Queijo sandwiches. The combination elevates the great sandwich to legendary status.
