A popular urban legend claims that the city is named after its founder. The first settlement — a wintering house — was founded in this area by a Kryvyi-Cossack named Rig. Also known is the Cossack Ivan Zhdan-Rig, who was the chieftain of Zaporizhzhya Sich in the 60s and 70s of the 17th century. The registers of Zaporizhzhya Kosh mention the Kryvyi Rih tract even before the establishment of a permanent settlement.
