About Lalibela
It's the 12th Century, a time when a visionary ruler named King Lalibela embarked on a monumental mission that took 24 years- to recreate the spiritual essence of Jerusalem in the heart of Ethiopia. At the time, Muslim conquests hindered Christian pilgrimages leaving devout Christians in the Kingdom of Roha yearning for pilgrimage to the Holy Land.
The town was named in honour of King Lalibela and is home to not only 1 but 11 medieval, subterranean monoliths joined by tunnels and trenches. Lalibela's monoliths are considered one of the most extraordinary architectural achievements in the world, showcasing intricate designs and craftsmanship. Each church is carved from a single piece of rock to symbolize spirituality and humility, with some plunging upto 11m in the ground.
It is clear why Lalibela is a center of pilgrimage and one of Ethiopia's holiest cities. Designated UNESCO World Heritage site in 1978, Lalibela attracts millions of visitors from far and wide globally for this architectural marvel as well as the picturesque views of the mountainous region of Ethiopia.
