The Coton de Tuléar is a Bichon dog type dog named after the city of Tuléar in Madagascar. Legend says that little white dogs were traveling companions of Europeans traders who often travelled by ships. In 16th century there was a shipwreck who killed all except few puffy dogs. They paddled to nearest shore of Madagascar. Some say that they were brought by pirates who established port in St. Mary Island, Madagascar. There are also untrue stories that these little white dogs were roaming around island, hunting wild boars and crocodiles. The fact is they have no prey drive and are not hunting dogs at all. Over the years they became domesticated and quickly became a favorite pet companion of elites and monarchs stationed on the Island. Ownership by commoners was strictly forbitten. In 1970s this dog breed became even more popular and reached places like France, Belgium and America. In 1974 Madagascar created a postage stamp with an image of Coton, this way recognizing it as nation’s symbol.
The Coton is fairly active and needs moderate amount of exercise. It may need to be bathed weekly, every two weeks, or monthly, depending on how dirty he gets. Coton is admired for fluffy, like cloud coat. its hair can be kept long or trimmed. In order to keep it healthy it’s necessary to brush their coats several times a week with a brush. For busy Pet owners frequent visits at dog groomer are necessary to prevent painful matted knots. Spend plenty of time with your pup as they don't like to be left alone and might develope separation anxiety.
