ABOUT KODA
Koda was a clever, silly, athletic, vocal and peculiar husky. He loved to go on backcountry ski treks, hike tall mountains and slosh through creeks. Although he may have dreamt of one-day pulling a sled, he eventually earned the nickname of “Slowda” as he preferred a leisurely pace. Like any husky, he was an opportunist, if there was a gate or door left cracked open, he'd sneak out with ninja-like swiftness and escape into the woods or in the back alleys of town, always on the hunt for scraps. He once wandered into the wilderness for two weeks, later returning home with his characteristic big goofy grin and a little wilder. We can only imagine what kind of adventure he was on. There wasn't a fruit or vegetable he didn't like. He gobbled up apples, broccoli stems, raw sweet potatoes and had a special fondness for carrots. Unique for a husky, he chased balls and swam in any pond he could find. He loved sleeping outside during frigid winter nights and despised hot summers. Koda passed away in April 2022, just before his 13th birthday. His parents, Crystal and Andrew, miss him terribly but are learning to appreciate a quiet house.
ABOUT THE BREED
Siberian huskies are classic northern dogs. They are intelligent, independent and stubborn. They need firm training right from puppyhood. These are dogs bred to run and love to wander and explore. Having a husky means checking your locks to make sure they can't escape. They've been known to climb fences and find all sorts of ways to break out of your house or yard. Most Siberian huskies are good with other dogs, especially ones they are raised with. They have a high prey drive and may chase cats and livestock. Siberian huskies can be diggers, particularly in warm weather, because they like to create cool places to lie in. They are very vocal and will howl and bark. Siberian huskies were developed under harsh conditions and love winter weather. This delightfully smart dog breed loves adventure, and they prefer to have adventures with you.
ADOPTING A HUSKY
If you think you'd like to adopt a husky, review our checklist below. A husky may be a fit for you if:
- ☑️ You live in a cold weather climate. Huskies love the snow and enjoy spending time in freezing temperatures.
- ☑️ You like to exercise outdoors. Huskies are bred to Run, Run, and Run! If you like to run and hike they will enjoy going along with you.
- ☑️ You don't have any other small animals in your home. Beware, huskies have a strong prey drive. While some huskies are good around other small animals, many huskies see them as prey, especially cats.
- ☑️ You have a fenced-in and secure yard. Huskies are escape artists. They have been known to jump over fences, even climb chain link fences.
- ☑️ You work from home. Huskies can be very destructive when left alone or bored. Huskies are pack animals and often prefer to have the company of other dogs around.
- ☑️ You don't need a guard dog. Huskies are very vocal and will bark and howl, but they typically don't show much concern toward visitors.
- ☑️ You are okay to walk your dog on a leash. Huskies can be challenging to train to be reliable off-leash and will often run away.
- ☑️ You don't mind having dog fur everywhere. Prepare for shedding. Huskies shed a lot!
