Although Maximus is a fictitious character, real gladiators were treated like rock stars, as they are depicted in the film. Those who were successful could gain favors and even earn their freedom. However, unlike the film, fights often did not result in the death of gladiators. The emperors did use their thumbs to determine if a gladiator should die or live, although we do not know if this was thumbs up for a living and thumbs down for getting killed.
