What is a Barbie doll?
The Barbie Doll saw the light in 1959. The name of the doll is inspired by a little girl named
Barbara, whose mother Ruth Handler came up with the idea to give her daughter action figures of
her own so she could play with her brother Ken. Barbie as a doll has been everything - a space
pilot, an explorer, a scientist, a fashion model, a tennis player, a flight attendant... and
also a simple girl who likes to hang out with her female friends, go to the beach, go shopping,
and party! The Ken doll was released for the first time in 1961, and has been Barbie's companion
ever since.
